Process Manufacturing (ERP)

The simplified definition of enterprise resource planning (ERP) software is a set of applications that automate finance and human resources departments and help manufacturers handle jobs such as order processing and production scheduling. ERP began as a term used to describe a sophisticated and integrated software system used for manufacturing. In its simplest sense, ERP systems create interactive environments designed to help companies manage and analyze the business processes associated with manufacturing goods, such as inventory control, order taking, accounting, and much more. Although this basic definition still holds true for ERP systems, today its definition is expanding. Today's leading ERP systems group all traditional company management functions (finance, sales, manufacturing, human resources) and include, with varying degrees of acceptance and skill, many solutions that were formerly considered peripheral (product data management (PDM), warehouse management, manufacturing execution system (MES), reporting, etc.). While during the last few years the functional perimeter of ERP systems began an expansion into its adjacent markets, such as supply chain management (SCM), customer relationship management (CRM), business intelligence/data warehousing, and e-Business, the focus of this knowledge base is mainly on the traditional ERP realms of finance, materials planning, and human resources. The old adage is "Such a beginning, such an end", and, consequently, many ERP systems' failures could be traced back to a bad software selection. The foundation of any ERP implementation must be a proper exercise of aligning customers' IT technology with their business strategy, and subsequent software selection. This is the perfect time to create the business case and energize the entire organization towards the vision sharing and a buy in, both being the Key Success Factors (KSFs). Yet, these steps are very often neglected despite the amount of expert literature and articles that emphasize their importance.

Mega-Vendors Warming Up to the Cloud - Part 3

Part 1 of this blog series depicted the three evolutionary phases (or waves) of software as a service (SaaS) and the adoption of cloud computing. The post ended with some glimpses into the future and likely implications for SaaS users. Part 2 then explored the apparent opportunities and accompanying challenges (and painstaking soul-searching exercises) that SaaS aspirants face in their

SAP's defenders (or Salesforce.com's attackers; there is some overlap), insist that SaaS is not suitable for enterprise users. Apparently they are unaware of the fact that hundreds of enterprises are using SaaS right now and intend to use more of it in the future... I tend to agree with Amy in part. Namely, in light of offering SAP Business ByDesign as an on-demand suite to prospects and Read More

The Marriage of Virtual Machines, Software as a Service, and Cloud Computing

New technology, such as virtual machines and high-speed internet communication, is leading to wider remote application hosting. Here is a tutorial-level technical explanation of how it’s being driven

At the ERP vendor or software packager, just before the application is ready for its first transaction, the entire virtual machine is saved to disk as a sequential (flat) file. When a client needs access to its ERP system, it initiates its VM system. The hypervisor assigns a slot and reads the flat Read More

They decided to take matters into their own hands and go directly to one of the up-and-coming HR cloud (SaaS) providers to spin up what they needed, and charged the purchase to the department credit card. The HR SaaS provider added the training module, which was automatically made available to the Healthy Diagnostics staff, and a department user decided to start posting the group’s training records in the system. Infor24: Demystifying Infor’s Cloud Strategy - Part 1

Anyone that is still vociferously doubting and denying the future of cloud computing and its near-mainstream nature will sound as strange and nutty as some US Senate hopefuls that still proudly deny evolution and climate change (while admitting to “dabbling with witchcraft” in the not-too-distant past). In fact, can anyone name a renowned enterprise resource planning (ERP
